i’m still laughing like did the creators/crew for the book of life all sit down and go
‘okay what should manolo sing for this scene’
‘creep by radiohead’
‘what—’
‘Creep. By. Radiohead.’
I actually LOVE the story of how they got to use Creep:
“Guillermo had admitted to me that he wanted ‘Creep’ for one of the ‘Hellboy’ movies and Radiohead wouldn’t give it to him. So when he saw it in the script he said, ‘Jorge, you’re not going to get that song. You better get used to…start thinking of a different song because you’re not getting that song.’ And so all the studio people said, ‘That’s a really tricky song to get. They are not going to give it to you.’ So caution to the wind, we sent the band a little video of what we were doing with the song. And they, for the first time ever, said, you know, the way you’re using the song is exactly what that song is for. It’s a teenager who doesn’t feel like he doesn’t fit in. And that’s who Manolo is. And he wants to be a musician. So they gave us permission to use the song. I couldn’t believe it. And then, after that every band who was on the fence about giving us a song, we would always say, ‘Well, are you saying you’re better than Radiohead?’ And that’s how we guilted a lot of bands.” (Source)
