I am a firm believer of the “fuck you, I’ll wear briefs that don’t give me a wedgie, I don’t care if they’re not sexy” policy, but a lot of women are expected to wear panties and thongs because GASP WOMEN MUST BE BEAUTIFUL AT ALL TIMES. What infuriates me the most is when guys say, “Women are so spendthrift! They spend so much on fashion! They’re so shallow! Look at me, I spend so much less on my clothes!”
WELL, BUDDY, THEY SPEND MORE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO, NOT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO. Nobody wants to spend more money, you fools. Women work as hard for their money as you do, if not harder, because of income inequality. If they could buy their clothes and shoes for as little as you do, they would.
Not to mention that cosmetics companies aggressively target their advertising campaigns to make women feel ugly and inadequate for not spending money on their products, and magazines and media conglomerates construct impossible ideals of beauty for women to aspire to—with their hard-earned money.
The entirety of society is geared to make women spend more on their appearance. It’s not a “feminine trait,” but a result of organized, deliberate, capitalistic misogyny. Misogyny you contribute to whenever you say that women are dumb, materialistic, shallow idiots who spend more on fashion because “that’s just what women do.”
It’s you whose perception of women is dumb, materialistic and shallow. It’s you who drive the system of belief that women should only ever appear on magazine covers and video games with shaved legs, exposed cleavage, high heels, permed hair, impractical clothes and zero focus on who they are, as opposed to what they look like.
It’s you who drive the system that makes women pay more for the same products, because they “ought” to “care more” about beauty and therefore should be willing to shell out more cash for it. The inequality in the pricing between “men’s” products and “women’s” products reflects the inequality between men and women. It’s that simple.
You’re the one who secretly believes that women “should” spend more on beauty… to make themselves more beautiful for you. And then you get to turn around and laugh at them for being “shallow” and “stupid” and spending “unnecessarily” on the very things you want them to spend their money on—that the whole socioeconomic system you’ve constructed forces them to spend money on.
You’re the reason women spend more money on their appearance than you do. So shut the hell up.
