Internal Biases are really important to deprogram. Being an ally means having to consciously fight to deprogram these biases that you benefit from that you may not agree with but still have. In conversations about oppression, we should not have to defend you and recentering the conversation on you perpetuates the issue

This is basically saying “Because you’re straight, but not homophobic- you’re doing nothing wrong but you’re contributing to the idea that everyone is heterosexual, like you can help being hetero”??? Oh my gosh would people just stop with this whole “supremacy” thing

There’s an entire video that is fully closed captioned with visuals and everything and you still don’t understand it.

What I’m saying is that straight people may consider themselves not to be homophobic, but it’s POSSIBLE (read: every straight person who is a gay ally has the capacity to) for a straight person to maintain heteronormality. The example I use in this fully captioned video complete with visuals is that a straight person can turn to a gay couple and ask them which one is the man and which one is the woman because they’ve been conditioned to only view romantic relationships through a heterosexual lens.

I implore you and everyone in general who criticizes things to actually do your research and understand something fully before criticizing it. Understanding something is the best way to have an accurate and effective criticism of it. When you criticize something prematurely and build up a strawman argument based on your lack of understanding, you end up looking sorta foolish. Food for thought.

Also please consider that there are people who identify similarly to you who are being willfully ignorant and will go to great lengths to excuse their own biases. They won’t listen to us queers/people of color. They’ll listen to YOU.

Exactly. And that’s why it’s so important for people to be aware of these things because the sad reality is I could spell out the abuse and shit I’ve dealt with as a woman, as a trans person and as a black person, but they’ll only empathize with someone who looks like them.
