After reading the comics, I appreciate so much more the personality they gave Eddie on the movie. On the comics before Venom, Eddie is kinda not that likeable, practically a con artists, and even though it’s implied he does it as an inherent need to be accepted and loved, is still very manipulative and selfish. After Venom, he only cares about being a hero, hate on spiderman and Venom for the most part, not minding at all if he has to kill in order to get him back.

And that is fine, don’t get me wrong. I like heroes that aren’t pure cinnamon rolls as much as any other guy and the obssesive love he has for Venom is lovely to see, especially as someone who enjoys stories about fucked up romances. This Eddie can be very fun, very interesting, very dark and I frankly love that.

But Movie!Eddie is also so… nice. But actually nice, like genuelly trying in general to be a good person nice, and sometimes fucking up terribly on the process. He didn’t need to be nice to Maria, there was absolutely nothing to gain from it (unlike the Comic!Eddie that would ignore her unless she was in danger), but he was. He didn’t need to be close to Mrs Chen, but he was. Fuck, he doesn’t even went to scream at his asshole neighbor for the noise before Venom because he didn’t want the conflict. I have screamed at neighbors for putting music way too loud because fuck it, but Eddie doesn’t. He doesn’t promise revenge against Dan for “taking Anne from him”. He doesn’t say a single bad thing about him or Anne for “abandoning him”, wich would have been the easy route.

I am glad they created a completely new origin story for him because in the original, Eddie fucks up because he wanted to be the center of attention no matter how many people got hurt. The reason he promises revenge against Spiderman (which at first is his major driving force) is petty, almost childish nonsense, something that only a person with a huge ego would think. Which makes sense because he was originally just a villain more.

Movie!Eddie saw a bad thing was happening and tried to denounce it the first chance he got. Yeah, he shouldn’t have opened up the email of Anne, thus is perfectly justfiable that Anne broke up with him after such bullshit that even got her fired, and the way he went about confronting the problem was naive at best, but the thing is that he wanted to do good, not only get attention. He was comfortable with his life as a success, but it’s never implied that success is the only thing that mattered to him, that he wanted it only for his own ego.

When everything goes down it’s justified he is there but still sympathetic. He is sad, not bitter. He is nostalgic, not obssesed about it. He is angry about people getting hurt, not indifferent. He struggles, but not against other people who aren’t out to harm him first. He is vulnerable, not putting out a mask that he doesn’t care and is above everything. What he did to Anne was bad, but he doesn’t come off as someone that doesn’t realize or doesn’t care.

He is a good guy. A relatable guy. A guy that fucks up. But still a essentially good person.

So yeah, I like this Eddie and I can see why Venom too.
